You may need to remove the barrel to read the mark. Shotguns have this mark stamped on the barrel near the chamber. For recent pistols this mark is usually located on the frame near the trigger guard, for older pistols, the mark is on the slide or on the frame behind the grip area. I just looked at one of my Beretta O/U's which I bought in 1994 and it has the BC date code (1993) enclosed in a square on the bottom of the barrels but not on the receiver. Pull the forearm off, remove the barrels, and look for it on the underside of the barrels and on the flats of the receiver, where the barrels rest against the receiver when closed. If it was made before 1945, I dunno - maybe no code. The codes seem to start in 1945 and the gun was discontinued in 1967, so yours will probably have a Roman numeral between I and XXIII. It is hard to read the words above the table in that image, but it says 'The markings are most commonly found on the receiver/frame and on the barrel.' I'm not familiar with Silver Hawks either, all I know is it is a side-by-side and the Blue Book says it was discontinued in 1967.
